Abner Doubleday was a 19th-century American Army officer known for his role in the Civil War, especially the Battle of Gettysburg. Following his military career, Doubleday wrote autobiographical sketches of his experiences in battle, including "Reminiscences of Forts Sumter and Moultrie". As captain at Fort Sumter, Doubleday made pivotal decisions that helped direct Union forces of the Confederacy.
Per Nevins of this work,
"This charming story, by a then-captain of artillery inside the two forts, is a memoir of merit because of the aura of its immediacy and intimacy."

Description:
1848 NEW YORK 1ed Westchester County MAP Colonial America Algonquian INDIANS 2v
A fascinating 1848 first edition printing of Robert Bolton's "History of the County of Westchester". This book is easily the most thorough and descriptive history of Westchester County, New York and western Connecticut covering the earliest settlements through the first half of the 19th-century. Bolton describes the Dutch settlers' encounters with Mohegan Indians and Algonquian tribes as well as the establishment and erection of churches throughout the county. Perhaps the most notable aspect of this work is the huge folding map found at the front of the first volume!

Description:
1736 Music CHANT 1ed Auxerre France Processional Catholic Hymns Latin Burgundy

Only known edition of this rare 18th-century Catholic processional.

Published in Lutetia Paris, "Processionale sanctae autissiodorensis ecclesiae" is an extensive collection of chant hymns used at the Cathedral of Auxerre. This music book is rather unique. While books with printed music was published during this era, few were published with the sole purpose of collecting songs for mass and corporate worship. The plainsong itself is rather difficult to comprehend when compared to modern notation – it features square note notation as well as four-line staves (though, this was not atypical of this era of church music). Hundreds of individual hymns and liturgical songs appear throughout.

Description:
1875 Jules Verne 1ed Wreck of the Chancellor + Martin Paz French Hetzel Voyages

"Reality provides us with facts so romantic that imagination itself could add nothing to them."
― Jules Verne

Jules Verne's adventure novels are some of the most popular and famous works of literature of all time. Known mostly for his works of science fiction, 'Voyages Extraordinaires' was Verne's largest collection of fantasy novels and stories. Verne's 'Wreck of the Chancellor' is the story of the final voyage of British sailing ship the Chancellor, told from the perspective of the diary one of its passengers. At the beginning of its voyage, the Chancellor carried eight passengers and twenty crew members, but tragically, by the end, only eleven people remained alive.

This undated first Hetzel edition was published alongside Verne's 'Martin Paz', a short story of Jewish man promising his daughter to a Catholic man in Peru. This issue is the first issue to include the 'JV – JH' initials on the front cover. Note… Read More

An incredibly rare and impressive Elzevier printing of Thomas Smith's "Anglorum". During the first half of the 17th-century, Elzevier published numerous works on European countries designed for travel and studies (Respublica). Smith, a 16th-century English diplomat, was the Secretary of State under King Edward VI of England. He also served under Elizabeth I, and was one of her most trusted Protestant advisors. His most important books was 'De Republica Anglorum' – in which Smith described England's government style as a commonwealth. This work has become a staple in the study of the English constitution.

1794 Scottish Literature Adventures of Peregrine Pickle by Tobias Smollett 4v

Tobias Smollett, a well-known 18th-century Scottish writer, was best-known for his translations and editions of famous works such as 'Don Quixote', 'Gil Blas', and Hume's "History of England". However, he did write a curious picaresque novel "The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle" which proved to be quote popular throughout the mid-18th-century. This work follows the humorous experiences of the title character noting his bad luck, successes, and misfortunes.

This 1794 edition was published in London by Cooke in four small tomes.

Description:
v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
