Description:
London: John Murray, 1850. New edition. Small square octavo, pp xvi, 144, (4). + publisher's catalogue 8 pages, with 12 lithographed plates, delicately hand-coloured, all edges gilt, very clean internally, a contemporary signature on the front endpaper [Charles H. Hingeston, 1852], original blind-stamped cloth, gilt lettering on upper cover, slightly faded, a little worn at the corners, very neatly re-backed with a modern cloth spine, unlettered. Still a very pleasing copy of a work which is difficult to find in good condition. [In many ways a ground-breaking work, as was much of Mantell's opus. It alerted the Victorians to an aspect of natural history which had previously largely escaped them, and was a remarkable precursor to the germ theory.]. Cloth. Very Good.

Manchester: R. & W. Dean, 1799. First edition. Two parts in one volume, octavo, pp viii, 1-227, (i), second title page, 229-449, (i), slight age-toning and the very odd fox-mark, but really very clean internally, contemporary tree calf, slightly worn at the corners, re-backed with a new calf spine, the original label preserved. A rare work, and especially so with its second title page preserved; this was frequently discarded because of the continuous pagination. [Soulsby - add. 772. Blanche Henry 861 - "Hull took up botany as a relaxation from medical duties". She also comments that of the other edition, the second of 1808, only the first part exists.]. [John Hull, M.D., was born at Poulton in Lancashire in 1764, and received his medical education at Leyden, where he graduated doctor of medicine 18th May, 1792. He settled at Manchester, and devoted himself especially to the practice of midwifery, and held the appointment of physician to the Lying-in Hospital there. He was admitted an…

New York: William Morrow and Company, inc., 1987. First Edition. Extensively illustrated with large and beautiful photographs. Square 4to, publisher’s original pictorial boards in the original decorated dustjacket. (30). A fine, bright copy. In clear, concise text and exceptional, full color photographs, noted science author Seymour Simon explains how different types of glaciers and icebergs are formed, how they move, and how they affect life on Earth. He also explores some of their mysteries: Can icebergs be used as a source of fresh water for dry lands? And will the ice ages return, covering the continents with glaciers as they did twenty thousand years ago?
