A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he taught engineering there and became a second lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. He was a professor of natural philosophy and chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1827 to 1843 and also served as the first president of Central High School of Philadelphia from 1839 to 1842.
