Description:
(2)p. manuscript letter measuring approx. 8" x 10 ½", folded, signed and dated January 14, 1867, Coast Survey Office, to Charles Lanman in regards to information pertaining to Prof. A.D. Bache. Mr. Hilgard was born in Germany. He settled with his parents in Illinois. Studied engineering in Philadelphia. He entered the Coast Survey in 1845. He was in charge of the Coast Survey under the Superintendent from 1862 until 1875. Throughout the American Civil War he served the Union Army and Navy by the construction of maps and charts and by surveys as well as by tidal and other information. During the failing health of Professor Bache, Hilgard, who was at that time in charge of the Coast Survey office, was obliged to perform the duties of Superintendent, which he did without extra compensation. He was Commissioner of the Committee of International Standards (seeking uniformity of weights and measures). In 1875, he was elected president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Author of… Read More

Stuttgart Verlag v. Krais & Hoffmann, Stuttgart, 1868; Large hand colored copper engraving of Mecynorhina torquata Drury and Acrocinus longimanus, together with sixteen other species of beetle. Contrary to its ferocious appearance, Mecynorhina is actually a pollen eater, native to tropical Africa, and among the largest of the world’s flower beetles, attaining a body length of more than 3". The South American Acrocinus or "Harlequin Beetle" depicted at right is of equivalent body size, but with long articulated forelegs that add an additional 6" to its overall length. Engraved identification key in the lower margin lists the Latin binomial and German common name for all beetles shown. An original double plate from C.F.A. Kolb’s Naturgeschichte des Tierreichs, published at Stuttgart in 1868. Hinged and matted entirely acid free, ready for framing. Full sheet size 13 1/4" x 16", matte window 12 3/4" x 14 1/4", outside matte dimensions 18" x 19 1/2".… Read More

Description:
1794 first UK edition. Volume is very good condition: no interior markings of any kind, most pages are uncut. Text block is soundly sewn with protective cardboard covers but has never been formally bound. Volume 2 of 5 volume set. (Volumes 1-4 are text; volume 5 is index and 39 plates.) This volume is complete as issued with all blanks. Collates: i-vii, 1-561, [2]. Adams was scientific instrument maker to George III. Adams is important in the history of the progress of science as he strongly advocated experimental science. I have provided a page from his lecture: "On The Method of Reasoning in Natural Philosophy" (p. 98 this volume) describing his commitment to experimental science. I cannot overstate the importance of this shift in scientific thinking - relying on experimental data instead of the wisdom of the ancients. The other feature of this volume, besides content, is that it is in its original state. New books sold in 1794 were presented to the buyer in exactly this condition. Plain cardboard… Read More
