About This Item

Washington D. C.: Unpublished, 1936. Original TLS on official State Department stationery addressed to 10-term Maryland Congressman T. Alan Goldsborough and boldly SIGNED by Cordell Hull, the Secretary of State who, as much as anyone' was responsible for the establishment of the United Nations. That effort earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945. The text of the letter acknowledges Goldsborough's endorsement of Willoughby N. Offley to be appointed as a Foreign Service officer. Offley retired from the U. S. Air Force in 1968 and was a member of both the Society of Cincinnati and the Descendants of Signers of the Declaration of Independence, but I have not found any evidence that he received the Foreign Service appointment. The letter is well-preserved, with light toning, the usual fold creases, and a few small spots of light foxing.. SIGNED. First Edition. Paper. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Manuscript.
