About This Item

Hartford/London: American Publishing Company/Chatto & Windus, 1880. Usually considered to be a sequel to "Innocents Abroad," and is another massive undertaking. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the First Edition. Brown cloth binding, ruled, with decorative figure and titling in gilt on the front cover and spine. Clean text; xvi, 631 pages, with a one-page advert for "Innocents Abroad" on the last page. 328 illustrations by various artists "with also three or four pictures made by the author of this book, without outside help." This is the Second Issue, with one of the frontis illustrations labeled as "Titian's Moses." Contemporary signature on the FFEP; inscription in the same hand (1884) on the next endpaper. Bumped and rubbed at head and foot of spine. Floodmark on lower front cover that has also affected the frontis engraving of Twain. The main issue is a cracked front gutter. Although holding, this makes the book feel rather loose; Quercus suggests some minor reinforcement to preserve this classic of American literature.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. Illus. by Various. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Synopsis

A Tramp Abroad is a work of non-fiction travel literature by American author Mark Twain, published in 1880. The book details a journey by the author, with his friend Harris (a character created for the book, and based on his closest friend, Joseph Twichell), through central and southern Europe. While the stated goal of the journey is to walk most of the way, the men find themselves using other forms of transport as they traverse the continent.
