  • Paperback

[Mexican-American War] Taylor and his Generals. A biography of Major-General Zachary Taylor; and sketches of the lives of Generals Worth, Wool, and Twiggs; with a full account of the various actions of their divisions in Mexico up to the present time; together with a history of the bombardment of Vera Cruz, and a sketch of the life of Major General Winfield Scott ... Philadelphia, E.H. Butler & Co.; New York, Burgess, Stringer & Co. 1847. Gray printed wraps. 17.75 cm x 11 cm. Illustrated. Map. 326 [8 ads] pp. [3] p. of the publisher's advertisements on endpapers and back cover. Covers separated, chipped; corners bent and bumped; water spots; scattered light foxing. Good.

Dorothy Sloan calls the second edition in wrappers, with 326 pages

"rare." See Catalog 24, No. 435. The first edition with 318 pages was published the same year as the second edition of 325 pages. See Haferkorn, The War With Mexico 1846-1848 p. 68. According to Garrett, The Mexican-American War of 1846-1848 p. 269 the text of the second edition is unchanged from the first edition, however that is not the case for the copies with 326 pages. This copy is "Butler's Cheap Edition," in wraps with 326 pages and lacking the "Price Twenty-five Cents" at the bottom of the cover of the second edition with 325 pages.

The text differs from that of the First edition, with a different frontispiece and adding approximately 9 pages of new material beginning at p. 317. The text of the last page of this issue also differs from the Library of Congress copy with 326 pages. It appears this text may be earlier than some versions as it discusses events in May but omits reference to events of August mentioned in the LOC copy. The text also differs substantially from a copy with 326 pages reproduced on archive.org that adds approximately 6 additional pages of details at the end and lacks the 8 pages of ads. From this information, it appears that the publisher up-dated the text at least three times and completely reset the type at least once in the later editions to incorporate new material not mentioned in the bibliographies
