About This Item
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1839. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition Thus, Harpers "Stereotype Edition" of "Eighteen Volumes Bound in Nine." This is #9 in the series, but containing volumes 9 & 10. Are we confused yet? Wait, there is more! The gilt on the spine reveals that this is now called "Volume 5" and is dated 1842. Quercus presumes Harper to have brought out another printing and issued it without any changes to its Title Page, perhaps using leftover sheets from the First Printing (an earlier version would probably have been published by "J. & J. Harper" rather than "Harper Brothers"). Quercus notes that this is what makes the book world interesting! Brown pebbled cloth binding in rather nice condition, with very bright gilt lettering. Clean text, also bright; 227 pages and 243 pages, bound together. Very little bumping and wear generally. There is some flood-marking and the pages are a bit stiff to turn; light foxing throughout, mainly confined to the endpapers. Contents are "The Absentee," "Madame de Fleury," "Emilie Coulanges," and "The Modern Griselda." . First Edition Thus. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
