Description:
North Hills: Bird & Bull Press, 1964. Octavo. 91pp. One of 200 copies. A biography on the life and work of Thomas Bird Mosher, the remarkable New England publisher and literary pirate. The Passionate Pirate is one of Henry Morris's earlier titles. In making it, he was plagued with both papermaking and printing problems, since he had recently acquired a new papermaking beater and a new printing press. The first bindings on the books were disastrous, and the entire edition had to be rebound. This copy is inscribed by Morris "For my good friend Remy Green" and dated 11/15/64. Remy John Barcham Green worked for, and later ran, J. Barcham Green Ltd., which operated the Hayle Mill in Kent, England. Morris was in frequent contact with Remy and his father Jack (John Barcham Green II) when he first began his papermaking journey in the 1950s. Morris says of his initial correspondence with Jack Green: "I really sent a barrage of questions and I must say that Mr. Green was extremely kind as he not only answered… Read More

Description:
A group of 15 black-and-white photographs of gaming tables produced by Mason & Co., which at one time was the nation's largest producer of gambling equipment. Several of these 8" x 10" images are stamped with a Newark, New Jersey address on the verso, dating the images to pre-1935 when the company consolidated its operations and moved them to Chicago. The company was founded in the late 1800s as Geo. Mason & Co. and initially produced ornate roulette wheels. According to a handwritten note on the back of one of the photographs, the images in this group show the new standard carved library equipment. There are a variety of mahogany tables for playing roulette and craps. One of the images in the group has been mocked up to show it in a residential setting, perhaps for a catalog. Along with the photographs, this group includes four brochures about gambling: Harrah's Club Lake Tahoe Gaming Guide, 1955; Roland Hill's In Las Vegas I Recommend: Where to Go, Stop, Eat, Play and Shop, 1950; Joe W. Brown's… Read More

Description:
SECOND EDITION, ENLARGED. 8vo, pp. [vi], 9-157, [1] blank; with engraved frontispiece 'Drawn & Engr. by T. Simms, Birm.m.' uncut in original boards, spine repaired with the remains of the spine label, a good copy. How much of Holbrook's work is autobiographical and reflects her experience through her 'nine years of misery' on the stage is difficult to gauge. In a series of ten 'Tales' Holbrook covers such topics as Filial Duty, Disobedience to Parents, Humanity, Selfishness, Piety, Conjugal Affection, 'Fatal Effects of Erroneous Education', Indolence, Perseverance, and Despondence. These tend towards the style of miniature Gothic novellas that are chiefly designed to tug at the heartstrings of the good Christian readers. At the conclusion of each tale Holbrook adds a few paragraphs of 'Reflections' explaining the significance of the actions of the actors in each of her tales. That they all seem to die grief stricken from mental suffering, transported for life, or restored to their families full of… Read More
