Description:
Secretary of the navy under Lincoln and Johnson. ADS, 1p, 8" X 9½", n.p., 1848 August. Very good. Attractive pale blue lined sheet. Welles, at this time chief of the bureau of provisions and clothing for the U.S. Navy, requests a $150 advance for costs incurred in traveling from Washington to Auburn, New York, to attend the case of United States vs. L. Caldwell, as well as reimbursement for two past trips. Signed with his usual cramped "GWelles." This item is accompanied by an exceptional and scarce 8" X 10" glossy photograph, a full-length portrait (possibly from a Mathew Brady negative?) made circa 1950 by pioneering photography historian FREDERICK HILL MESERVE (1865-1962), "America's first great photograph collector" who assigned numbers to Lincoln photographs ("Meserve numbers") that are still used today. This striking image was quite likely made from the original glass plate negative, as was Meserve's habit. It is identified on the verso in pencil in Meserve's distinctive hand: "Gideon Welles /…

North Hills: Bird & Bull Press, 1964. Octavo. 91pp. One of 200 copies. A biography on the life and work of Thomas Bird Mosher, the remarkable New England publisher and literary pirate. The Passionate Pirate is one of Henry Morris's earlier titles. In making it, he was plagued with both papermaking and printing problems, since he had recently acquired a new papermaking beater and a new printing press. The first bindings on the books were disastrous, and the entire edition had to be rebound. This copy is inscribed by Morris "For my good friend Remy Green" and dated 11/15/64. Remy John Barcham Green worked for, and later ran, J. Barcham Green Ltd., which operated the Hayle Mill in Kent, England. Morris was in frequent contact with Remy and his father Jack (John Barcham Green II) when he first began his papermaking journey in the 1950s. Morris says of his initial correspondence with Jack Green: "I really sent a barrage of questions and I must say that Mr. Green was extremely kind as he not only answered them all, but to this day continues to give help and advice." When Jack was ill in August 1957, Remy replied to one of Morris's letters, and afterwards they became "good friends," meeting several times when Remy visited the United States. In addition to the inscription, this copy has a J. Barcham Green Ltd. stamp to the front flyleaf, dated 1 December 1964. One of the Press's more desirable pieces, with an interesting association, considering the issues Morris had in creating it. A fine copy in morocco-backed decorated paper boards, housed in a drop-back box with leather spine label. (Bird & Bull Bibliography A5; Omnibus, pp. 38, 43-49).

FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. XXX; with attractive vignette on title; expert repair to corner of title and throughout (not affecting the text), otherwise a clean copy throughout; stitched as issued in contemporary, possibly original, stiff wraps, light rubbing to extremities, otherwise a very good copy.First and only edition of this anonymous satirical poem on the subject of snuff and tobacco, apparently by "a famous milanese author", whose identity we have been unable to ascertain, although Melzi does note a similar work, Il Cavalier del Dente, which appeared the previous year, and is attributed to Gaetano del Hoyo. The work sings the praises of snuff, by means of which the chaste nose will sniff out bliss, and includes a dedication "all ordine chiarissimo di tutte quante le tabacchiere".
Not in Melzi; OCLC records just one copy only, at the New York Public Library.

'Members had to contribute equally and there was a long time lag between the first and the last members being housed. It was difficult to withdraw from a society once committed and it was cumbersome to admit new members. The terminating building society was not suited to cater for those who simply wished to invest their savings without taking out mortgages, which was a major drawback given the dearth of investment opportunities for middle-and working-class…
