London: John Macrone, 1836. Second Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: vi [1]2-305; [iv][1]2-302; [i-iii]iv-viii [1-3]4-375. THE SECOND SERIES. Three volumes uniformly bound in half black leather over marbled boards, raised bands with gilt trim to spine, marbled endpapers, and pictorial title page. The twenty-seven plates include two not found in the first edition. These volumes each lack the half-title page. Dickens' first book had an immediate impact. His writing "...broke new ground...written in a new style...seemed to bring a refreshing breath of reality into the literary atmosphere..." (Gissing, 'The Immortal Dickens', 1924). True first editions of this book are extremely scarce. Eckel comments on this and points out that "...so rare are first-class copies of the early issue of the original edition that a record price...was established for a set in parts...in 1908". (Eckel 'The First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens' 1913). The second series contains an extra story not found in the first issue. 'The Drunkards Death' is the final story in volume III. It was completed by Dickens while he was working on several other projects. A very good, or better, set with light shelf rubbing. The green ribbon markers are present all volumes but is detached and laid in volume 1. There is some soiling to the gilt top edges of all three volumes.

1848 1ed Pieter Harting Microscope DUTCH Biology DARWIN Influence Illustrated 3vPieter Harting was 19th-century Dutch scientist who is best remembered for his contributions to the development and use of the microscope and microscopy. He published what proved to be the greatest book on microscopy, titled simple 'The Microscope', which provided lessons on using the microscope as well as covering designs for lens improvements.
It should be noted that Harting was one of the earliest supporters of Charles Darwin's evolutionary theories, many of which were endorsed by Harting's microscope findings. In fact, according to Darwin scholar Eve-Marie Engels, Harting was "one of the most influential" of all 19th-century scientists and philosophers.
This 1848 Dutch edition of 'The Microscope' is illustrated with 18 impressive folding engravings featuring numerous figures depicting microscope parts, lenses, cells, burners, and scalpels.

Description:
Strahan & Co. Publishers, London, 1871. Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The first collected edition. 12mo. Original green cloth with bevelled edges, the spine and upper boards gilt lettered and decorated, with blind-stamped decorations to the rear boards. All edges gilt. The cloth lightly marked in places, with some bruising to the spine ends. A touch of light very occasional spotting. The binding of volume eight cracked and splitting at the front hinge and most gatherings quite tender as a result. The half title and title page of volume six detached and laid-in, and five further volumes exhibit some tenderness to the front hinges and one a short tear to the upper gutter. A nice bright set, somewhat marred by the aforementioned binding issues, but really very crisp internally. The first collected edition of the author's complete and vastly influential fantasy output, comprising 'Within and Without' and 'A Hidden Life' (volume one), 'Poems', 'The Gospel…

Description:
This version of The Tales of Chekhov featuring the famous story "The Lady with the Dog" is extremely rare. The original story was published in 1899 and there was an English translation as early as 1903, but this version was among the first Chekhov translations by the famous Russian-to-English translator Constance Garnett. The book is ex-library, but from a retirement community library with few readers--although it is stamped on the endpapers and title page. Two previous owners inscribed the front endpaper in ink: "Gordon Steward Crawford, July 19, 1933" and "Raymond Cunningham, March 18, 1940"

1800 1st English ed Sonnini Travels in EGYPT Egyptian Sexuality ArchaeologyCharles Sigisbert Sonnini was a French naturalist who served Louis XVI and under the Napoleonic Regime. In 1777, Sonnini was ordered by the king and Count Buffon to explore Egypt, a voyage that lasted three years. According to Blackmer's 'Sotheby's Catalogue',
"Sonnini set out with baron de Tott's expedition in 1777. On arrival at Alexandria he found orders to explore Egypt from Louis XVI awaiting him. This he proceeded to do, going on to Turkey, Greece, Crete and the Archipelago. He returned to Manoncourt in 1780 where he cultivated many new vegetables and herbs, his interest in natural history is evident from the number of plates in the above work showing plants and fish; indeed Sonnini collaborated with Buffon on an edition of the latter's works.
The contents of this book, however, were not only focused on geography and natural science. According to Cox, Sonnini discusses

Description:
1805 1ed SLAVERY African Memoranda Capt Philip Beaver Bulama Colony Sierra Leone Captain Philip Beaver was an 18th-century Royal Navy officer who is best known for his colonization voyage to the island of Bulama. This 1792 voyage proved to be a complete failure – the colonists who survived were uninspired, unhealthy, and apathetic toward establishing a new colony and moved to nearby Sierra Leone.
Beaver's book 'African Memoranda' is the captain's account of the events on the ship as well as on the island of Bulama. This first edition includes two engravings of the 'block house' on the island. Interestingly, this book became a catalyst for abolishing African slave trade.
