About This Item
Nice condition antique copy of "ROUGHING IT" by Mark Twain with its original dust jacket. 1913; Grosset & Dunlap; New York. With a frontispiece illustration. Complete in one volume. From the dust jacket: "The glittering panorama of the life in the West and on the coast in unfolded in this running story of Mark Twain's daily life and experiences there. He lived the life he describes and mingled with the miners, the gamblers, and the great imaginative pioneers who were building a commonwealth unawares. Its humor is fresh, rollicking, altogether delightful. It is, in fact, a marvelous picture of the overland pioneer days - the frontier aspects - at a time when the frontier itself, even with its hardships, was little more than a joke; when the frontiersmen were obliged to be laughing philosophers in order to survive the stress of their rude warfare. 'Western humor,' so called is the wildest, freshest humor in the world, but in those days at least there was hardship, even tragedy behind it." Uncommon with its original dust jacket.
Condition:
The book is in Near Fine condition and appears unread - clean both inside and out with only a small tear at the lower-inner corner of the frontispiece by the spine. The dust jacket has pieces missing at the top and bottom edges of the spine; small tears along the perimeter; larger 3" tear at the bottom of the front flap crease that has been repaired with a strip of clear tape on the back-side (2 of the smaller tears have also been repaired with clear tape on the back-side)...overall the jacket is in Good condition.
