Written a few years after Burton's celebrated account of his journey to Mecca and Medina, this book describes the explorer's 1860 visit to Salt Lake City. Burton, who met Brigham Young on the trip, applied his characteristic ethnographic eye to Mormon ways, and his work offers a detailed and sympathetic portrait. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1876. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 4to, pp vii, 152, + 22 plates (11 chromolithographs) and a large folding map. Original blind-stamped brown cloth boards, rebacked with new cloth spine and paper label, new endpapers. Text and plates very clean, map near fine, with minor toning. Macomb's mission was to locate a route for the movement of military supplies from Santa Fé, New Mexico to Utah and to map unknown portions of the geography in the western United States. Newberry was authorized to be the expedition's geologist and botanist. Publication of Macomb's account was planned for 1861 but was delayed by the Civil War, which allowed for the inclusion of Newberry's report. The map, which covers Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and part of Colorado, is described by Wheat (983) as "one of the most beautiful ever published by the army" and "a landmark map" both for its content (showing the routes of many other explorers in addition to Macomb) and the method of its creation by F.W. Egloffstein, who also made the maps for the Ives report. Farqhuar (23) notes that "the lithograph of Shiprock is one of the most pleasing scenic views made in that epoch." Howes M-179; Graff 2647.

Closed tear in map at bound-in edge, separations at a few cross-folds, a couple old tape repairs. Overall, a good plus copy. The expedition under Macomb went west from Santa Fe across northern New Mexico and Arizona to the Colorado. Most of the text is given over to the geological report of J.S. Newberry. Although not published until 1876 due to the Civil War, the expedition took place in 1859.
