About This Item
Prince and the Pauper, by Mark Twain 1882, James R. Osgood and company Boston First edition, first printing, first state with errors. Original 3/4 publisher's morocco leather with marbled boards.
Issue Points:
A first printing must meet the following two points:
1) Franklin Press imprint on copyright page . 2) The following textual errors: "estate" on page 124, "do not" on 263, and "reigned" on 362.
Though this book was issued in the last days of December of 1881, all first printings of this title gave "1882" on the title page and "1881" as the copyright. This book has a Christmas gift inscription dated 1881, so this book was likely purchased and gifted immediately.
* For a full discussion of the complex bibliographical history of this book consult the `Firsts' magazine issued in July/Aug/Sept, 1998* Condition:
Very good condition. Leather bindings of Twain books are notoriously found in poor shape. This copy is seldom seen in such exemplary shape. Hinges and binding tight. Some wear to the edges and boards as expected. A truly excellent example of this volume. Internally quite nice, save for two PO stamps on the front blanks (not the marble paper), a crossed out name, and an intact name. One additional stamp on one of the final blanks.
Synopsis
The Prince and the Pauper is an English language novel by American author Mark Twain. It was first published in 1881 in Canada before its 1882 publication in the United States. The book represents Twain's first attempt at historical fiction. Set in 1547, the novel tells the story of two young boys who are identical in appearance: Tom Canty, a pauper who lives with his abusive father in Offal Court, London, and Edward VI of England, son of Henry VIII of England.
