About This Item

New York: P.F. Collier, 1870. Thomas Moore (1779-1852) was often refered to as "Ireland's National Poet;" he was one of the most popular writers of the mid-19th Century. This is a beautifully-produced compendium, the "coffee-table" book of its day and intended for the Irish diaspora in America. Large, heavy octavo. Highly decorative Victorian binding, here in a variant reddish-brown cloth (most often seen in an Irish green, of course). All the various Irish designs are filled with gilt. Clean text; 639 pages, indexed. All edges are gilt. There is no publication date, but Quercus ventures that stylistically it would be around 1860-80 (although Quercus has seen a similar edition by a British publisher that was from 1856). Due to their weight, these large Victorian volumes are often seen with split hinges; this copy has a front hinge reinforced with a linen tape. Rubbing and bumping at the margins, else a Very Good (Plus) copy. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Thus.. Decorative Cloth. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
