About This Item

London: Bradbury & Evans, 1846. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket, As Issued. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. pp: [viii][1]2-269 [3]. Original blue cloth boards with blind stamp decoration, two pages of adverts, pictorial title page. In 1844, Dickens took a respite from writing novels and for several months travelled through France and Italy with his family. About one-third of the book first appeared in the 'Daily News' from January to March, 1946. These were edited (some additions, some deletions) for the book. In the book, Dickens wrote of his encounters with Italy's colourful street life. He was a bit daring, travelling to the summit of Mt. Vesuvius on an icy night. And this writing captures the imagination. Dickens is particularly drawn to the costumes, cross-dressing, and sheer exuberance of the Roman carnival. This is a very good copy with moderate edge wear to the boards and soiling to the edge.

An account of the travels of Dickens and his family travelling throughout the country.

Synopsis

From the book:If the readers of this volume will be so kind as to take their credentials for the different places which are the subject of its author's reminiscences, from the Author himself, perhaps they may visit them, in fancy, the more agreeably, and with a better understanding of what they are to expect. Many books have been written upon Italy, affording many means of studying the history of that interesting country, and the innumerable associations entwined about it. I make but little reference to that stock of information; not at all regarding it as a necessary consequence of my having had recourse to the storehouse for my own benefit, that I should reproduce its easily accessible contents before the eyes of my readers.
