About This Item
Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1930. Vintage double weight portrait photograph of writer P.G. Wodehouse, circa 1930. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio stamp crediting photographer Clarence Sinclair Bull on the verso, and Bull's blindstamp on the bottom right corner of the recto.
Wodehouse went to Hollywood in 1929, largely at the behest of his wife, Ethel May Wayman. He signed as a screenwriter with MGM in 1930, making a substantial $2000 a week, but found the work dissatisfying, and his contract was not renewed after it ended in 1931.
Photographer Clarence Sinclair Bull worked as the head of the MGM stills department for forty years, specializing in publicity stills and portrait photography. Bull was best known as Greta Garbo's photographer from 1929 to 1941, but also worked with many of the studio's leading stars of the period, including Clark Gable, Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Grace Kelly.
8 x 10.25 inches. Near Fine, with light wear at the bottom corners.
