Description:
Beverly Hills, CA: United Artists, 1959. Original lobby card for the 1959 film "The Chaplin Revue," a re-release of three of Charlie Chaplin's earlier films: "A Dog's Life" and "Shoulder Arms" (both from 1918), and his final short film, "The Pilgrim" (1923). Lobby card No. 7 in the set depicts a scene from "Shoulder Arms," where the Tramp is a boot camp private who goes on a mission in enemy territory. The 1959 re-release included a new soundtrack written by Chaplin, designed to increase appeal to modern audiences. Universally acclaimed as an actor, director, and producer, Chaplin and his iconic Tramp character especially captured the hearts of the filmgoing population, and to this day he is considered a legendary innovator in comedic cinema. By rereleasing his films together in this manner he hoped to win over a new generation of audiences to his character, and to an extent it worked. Though Chaplin would remain in Europe throughout the 1960s, his status in the public eye as a blacklisted… Read More

Description:
Various cities: Various Publishers, 1967. A collection of 10 original lobby cards for the Mexican releases of nine films directed by or featuring Charlie Chaplin. Highlights of this bright, charming collection include lobby cards for the Mexican releases of Chaplin's "Limelight," "King of New York," and "The Circus," as well as two variants for "The Chaplin Revue," seen here as both " La Revisita de Chaplin" and the official release title "La Cabalgata de Chaplin." Also present are three other unidentifiable cards, likely festival days featuring multiple pieces of Chaplin's work, and two cards for documentaries featuring Chaplin: the 1967 "The Funniest Man in the World" and the 1960 "When Comedy was King," translated here simply as "Risas y mas risas," no doubt an appropriate, if slightly misleading, title interpretation. Universally acclaimed as an actor, director, and producer, Chaplin and his iconic Tramp character especially captured the hearts of the filmgoing population worldwide, and to… Read More

Description:
New York: Kanrom, 1963. First Edition. First Edition. Two volumes, oblong 16mo, illustrated paper boards. Published by controversial comedian and singer, Jackie Kannon, and his friend Alex Roman, about whom not much is known. The two entrepreneurs also published the "JFK Coloring Book" and a book of poetry called, "Poems from the John" (largely written by television writer, Sol Weinstein). Jackie Kannon was a night club entertainer, singer, and comedian, who made daring statements about race, women's rights, birth control, and politics, much in the vein of Lenny Bruce. Kannon also had ties to mobsters, and worked out of a mob-owned establishment known as "The Rat Fink Room," the name likely inspired the title of the first volume. With the popularity of Charles M. Schulz' "Happiness Is a Warm Puppy" (1962)published a year earlier, Kannon and Roman decided to take their own stance on happiness, with these parodies of Schulz' "Peanuts" classics. Both volumes with spine lean, rubbing at the… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1963. Vintage borderless reference photograph of Orson Welles from the 1963 film. Italian "ROGOPAG / LA RIOTTA" stamp on verso. An anthology film of four short films, titled after the names of the four directors: "Illibatezza," directed by Roberto Rossellini, "Il Nuovo Mondo," directed by Jean-Luc Godard, "La Ricotta," directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, and "Il Pollo Ruspante," directed by Ugo Gregoretti, Pasolini's scathing comic rebuke on social inequality and religious hypocrisy, wherein a lavish film production of the crucifixion of Christ, in a poor region outside Rome, finds the extra playing the "good thief," Stracci (Mario Cipriani), quite literally starving during the production, trying everything to get some food, all while being berated by the bombastic, insufferable director (Orson Welles). The film resulted in Pasolini being convicted of blasphemy, and the film being banned in Italy. Pasolini was sentenced to a four month prison term, which he avoided by paying a fine.… Read More
