1883 Mark Twain 1st UK ed The Gilded Age Novel American US Politics Government

"A woman's intuition is better than a man's. Nobody knows anything, really, you know, and a woman can guess a good deal nearer than a man."
― Mark Twain, The Gilded Age
Appearing in more than 100 editions, this lesser-known Twain novel is his only work in which he collaborated with another author. "The Gilded Age" has become synonymous with materialism and the corruption, greed, and selfishness amongst mankind, particularly in Washington D.C.
This 1883 first British edition features 212 illustrations.

Straight, tight and clean with no markings, slightly rolled and faded spine, nicks to top edge of front board and head of spine, two small holes and edge nicks to front endpaper, small split to paper at front hinge. The many accomplishments of this multi-talented pianist, composer, novelist, poet, sculptor, and photographer were overshadowed by his homosexuality and his unlikely friendship with the prize fighter Jack Pollock. Description:
v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
