Description:
Charles Landis, Vineland, NJ, 1875; 21" x 28", 4 pgs., plus 2 pg. Supplement. March, 1875 issue of The Vineland Rural newspaper, published by dynamic 19th century visionary Charles K. Landis (1833-1900), founder, designer, developer, and promoter of Vineland, New Jersey. After traveling throughout the United States in search of an ideal location, Landis settled upon Cumberland County, New Jersey as the site to realize his plan for a place of beautiful homes, manufacturies, businesses, schools, and churches, populated by hardworking, prosperous, contented citizens, all laid out with a mind toward beauty, and surrounded by thriving farms. "I desired to make Vineland so desirable a place to live in by reason of its various privileges, and over all to throw such a halo of beauty, as to make people loath to leave it." After purchasing 20,000 acres in 1861 from prominent Quaker landowner Richard D. Wood, Landis quickly set about drawing up plans, clearing a wide boulevard, and…

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire…

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
