One of 100 copies, numbered and signed by Michael Foreman on the title page and with a numbered and signed original etching loosely inserted. This copy number 1 of the book and etching. Illustrated in full colour throughout with the text confined to the margins. Hemingway's children's short story, a loose parody of Ferdinand the Bull, was originally published in Holiday magazine in 1951. This is the first printing with these illustrations. A fine copy in publishers laminated boards with full colour illustration to the front board. Colour illustrated endpapers. Etching image measures 3.9 x 3 inches on a sheet of untrimmed hand made paper measuring 9.5 x 7.5 inches, and has a loose tissue guard to protect it. The book is housed in a plain brown paper covered slip case.

Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Both boards have ruled and doted line borders with elaborate floral corner decorations. Board edges with flower and dot roll in gilt. Inner gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Two navy blue silk bookmarks sewn in. Neat previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown endpaper. A fine, beautifully bound copy.

Original publishers paper wraps, printed in gold, both front - which is illustrated, and rear, are bound in. Attractive early leather binding of full red pebble grained morocco. Gilt ruled and dotted line, with floral devices, design to both boards and spine. Front board lettered in gilt. Board edges with gilt dots. Marbled endpapers. Eight line poetic inscription to the front blank free endpaper. Faded light purple ex library stamp to the title page and the leaf with the inscription. Overall a very good and attractively bound copy of this uncommon little book. Copac shows just 3 copies of this 1858 edition, and one of those listed as only having 10 of the plates.

Inscribed by Gill on the front free endpaper "Eric Gill for H. Davis, 22.3.28" A very good copy in original grey canvas spine, lettered in black, with red paper covered boards with black lettering and illustration to the front board. Some loss to the paper on the boards, affecting 7 letters of the address at the bottom. Spine with just a little darkening. Overall a very good copy. Uncommon inscribed by Gill. --Evan Gill. Elaborate gilt tooled stars, flowers and decorative roll borders to the inner boards with off-white moire silk endpapers. All edges gilt.
