About This Item
New York: M. Witmark and Sons, 1897. Wraps. Good. Folio. Six pages, including covers. Front cover with racist depictions of African-Americans, although it's possible it's the equally racist depiction of whites in blackface. Music to a march song that introduced the "Darkey Cavaliers," presumably a troupe that performed in Blackface. Research indicates Reed composed several racist songs, apparently trying to cash in on this genre of performance that depicted Black Americans as buffoons and solidified racism as an acceptable norm in American culture at the time. GOOD condition. Spine completely reinforced with tape. Covers a bit toned, with some soiling. Moderate chipping and tearing along the edges. Paper browned in the interior.
