Mahurin- http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~genjournalz/mahurin.html- Hardcover:-8vo- Acceptable-Fair/ no jacket as issued- original full calf leather, rubbed and soiled-but tight and maroon leather with gilt paste-on title on spine still complete and legible- [i-iii], [1-3], 4-223, [i], ii-vii, [225-227], 228-352, [i], ii-iv, [1-22- index], blank blank., are age toned, some light dampstains in some margins, edges have some light staining as do covers- possible bloodstains, please note inscription on first blank- 2 signatures by Mahurin, one dated April 11 th, 1811, his stamp, again his signature and Columbia, NH- and "....taken from S. [Samuel] Hugh's _____, (body?)- [did he recover his property?], Aug. 10, 1812.- Quite possible, since this book went through the War of 1812- Inscription on 1st rear blank- "Thomas Truxton (crossed out) again Thomas Truxton (again crossed out) and Alexander Truman (partly crossed out)...for value received, payment received."- Truxton being of course future Admiral Thomas Truxton (http://bing.search.sympatico.ca/?q=thomas%20truxton&mkt=en-ca&setLang=en-CA) but, who was a privateer during the War of 1812. Quite possible a debt Mahurin occured, but more likely a debt Truxton had occured and the debt was crossed out by Mahurin. Fascinating! Also- It was resolved on Dec 24, 1799 to erect a marble statue to Washington and under it interre his body (page 208-210)....and......"...that the President of the United States be requested to direct a copy of these resolutions to be transmitted to Mrs. Washington........"- Now, this copy has written in ink on front cover...."Proceedings of the Sixth Congress of the United States at............[some words are extremely difficult to make out] at bottom very faintly a signature. (Looks like John ????) and , on rear cover, quite plainly "----? [Dedicated to] Gen. George Washington, the Father of Our Country."- Fep is partially adhered to inner front cover pastedown, but has possibilities of being lifted by careful methods. Clearly, a 200th anniversary piece of Americana from 1812 and on the death of Washington and the 6th Congress. Description:
1934 1st ed Herbert Hoover SIGNED Challenge to Liberty on Franklin Roosevelt "Children are our greatest natural resource."
― Herbert Hoover
Herbert Hoover was the 31st President of the United States known for his business plans during the Great Depression. Shortly following his presidency and retirement from politics, he published 'The Challenge to Liberty' which was a harsh, critical work of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, calling much of Roosevelt's plans 'fascist'! According to Polenberg,
"Hoover raised an important issue when he claimed that big government would attempt to protect itself from criticism by blocking the free flow of information and therefore represented an insidious threat to freedom of speech and the press."
This 1934 first edition is signed by author and former president Herbert Hoover!

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire…
