About This Item
Japan 201 Hearn, Lafcadio, 1850-1904. Lands and seas. Compiled with notes By T. Ochiai. Tokyo: The Hokuseido Press, (1925?), iii, 273 pages, notes. Paperback, toning to paper with some signatures (gathering of pages) browner than others. Decent copy else. The date on the verso of the title page has copyright date of 1925 but I believe that this was post 1939. There was a revised edition in 1939 whereas the earlier editions had 311 pages plus a facsimile manuscript page of a Hearn letter. Teisaburō Ochiai was Hearn's student and a professor at Peers' College, Japan. There is a somewhat jolting note, signed in English, on the front free endpaper; "Fay V. C. Howard, Hiroshima, Japan, 1946". $15.00 Box A 98
Eleven essays by Hearn: My first day in the Orient; A pilgrimage to Enoshima; Fuji-No-Yama; Notes of a Trip to Kyoto; In Osaka; Matsue; By the Japanese Sea; From Hoki to Oki; In a Japanese Garden; A Midsummer Trip to the Tropics; A Winter Journey to Japan; Notes by Ochiai.
