The British and Foreign Bible Society, 1862. Hardcover. Good. Mid-19th century KJV English Bible printed by George E. Eyre and William Spottiswoode for the British and Foreign Bible Society in 1862. Bound in dark-brown leather with gilt "Holy Bible" to spine panel. Blind rulings and decorative elements to spine, front and back panels. Presumably a personal copy of prominent Seventh Day Adventist leader and pastor and later one of its most outspoken critics D. M. Canright. Inscription on front free endpaper reads: "R Deming Bible | Bought January 24, 1866 | of Elder Canright | Seventh day adventist | Price $3.00". Numerous additional inscriptions on endpapers, likely in Deming's hand. Unpaginated. 6 7/8" x 4 5/8". Tight copy with moderate shelf wear, slightly bumped corners and superficially split hinges (not affecting integrity of binding). Light staining to front pastedown and two preliminary blanks. Modern acid-free dyed flax over boards with gilt-tooled leather spine label. Contents: Sermon I. The Sinfulness and Misery of Man -- Sermon II. The Helplessness of Man -- Sermon III. The Power and Love of Christ -- Sermon IV. Faith in Christ -- Sermons V -- X. The Believer a new Creature, wherein that Character is largely described -- opposed to that of a careless Sinner -- and contradistinguished from that of a Formalist -- Sermon XI. An earnest Address to the Careless -- the Formal -- the new Creature. In 1746 Samuel Walker (1714-1761) was appointed curate of Truro, where he experienced an evangelical conversion. His popular sermons emphasized evangelical theology. Very scarce. In Good Condition: lacking lower corner of title page with partial loss of imprint; old staining on some pages; light foxing; otherwise, clean and tight.

Folio contemporary calf on four raised bands, blind rules and fleurons to corners with 2 (later) red spine labels (lower cover nearly detached/upper held by inner hinge/tips worn spine damaged, remnants of some sort of single clasp). Titlepage in Red and Black +[12]pp Dedication, Preface & Contents +[2]pp with vertical Title +247pp +[2]pp blank. Name Roberts to upper margin of title later partially overwritten by Rachel Dowding, West Dulwich. Pastedowns have been covered by tan silk. Final blank lacking corners and some offsetting from the last printed page. Some pale foxing thoughout. Side notes giving references and dates.

Amsterdam: Offficina Elseviriana, 1674 pp (1) + (2) + (8) + 408 ; internally very good subject to a little browning, pages evidently trimmed but no loss, binding firm. The cover, morroco with tooled decorations, which looks to be early 19th cent, has moderate wear to the extremities of the spine

Spine cloth chipped at the crown with closed tear, binding lightly shaken. Good overall, but very good internally, clean, unmarked, no foxing. . Hard. Good/No Jacket, As Issued. 8vo.

It was published in 1837 in the original publisher's binding with the title : LINE FOR LINE. Pt. I . This is the only indication that it is Part 1 of a two part volume except for the Publisher's note following the last page (346), which reads: Will shortly be published, by J.
