LONDON : John White, 1807 A very good copy of Rousseau's Letters translated and explained by Professor Thomas Martyn, 7th corrected and improved edition bound with Thirty-Eight plates, also by Thomas Martyn, 1794. In newer half leather binding with title label to spine and marbled boards. Page edges marbled. Letters is 503 pp plus index sections, with folding table outlining Linnaeus' system. The Thiry-Eight plates, a complete work in itself with separate title page, but prepared to link with the Letters, is 72 pp with 38 beautiful hand coloured plates by Nodder. The binding is in very good condition with a little scuffing to the spine. The contents are generally in very good condition with nice clean text pages. The plates are clean and brightly coloured. There is a small stain which affects the bottom left hand corner of plates 36-8, not affecting images.

Erxleben), world’s largest rodent, which reaches a mature size of up to four feet in length and three in girth and inhabits the banks of lakes and rivers, where it is distinguished for the webbed feet which make it an agile swimmer, and for its remarkable ability to submerge itself for long periods of time without resurfacing. Drawn by Alexander Mosses (1793-1837), who with no formal training developed into an acknowledged master draughtsman and painter of nature scenes, genre pieces, and portraiture, his subjects ranging from members of the privileged classes to common people. His portrait of prominent physician John Rutter hangs in the Royal Institution, Liverpoole, and his work is in the permanent collections of both the Walker Art Gallery and the National Galleries Of Scotland. Fine example of Riviere and Son binding in exceptional condition (see image). Full deep red morocco with gilt rule to boards; 5 raised bands and intricate gilt detailing to spine. Gilt ruled edges; intricate inner dentelles; all edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Frontispiece (with tissue guard) and 15 aquatint hors-texte plates throughout. Includes an advertisement page after title page stating this book would have been released earlier, but "impediments" and the plates delayed its release. There is also included a section for Notes and Errata. Without previous owners' names or other markings. 259 pp., [1]. 5 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches.
