About This Item
1948 - Flophouse An Authentic Undercover Study of Flophouses, Cage Hotels, Including Missions, Shelters and Institutions Serving Unattached (Homeless) Men. A Sociological Study that Includes English Origins of Mass Relief -- Samples of American Mass Relief and a Modern Investigation of Public and Private Policies in Chicago. New Hampshire: Marshall Jones Company, 1948 First Edition.Signed by author ( see photograph )
"In the role of a bona fide client, the author registered for relief, took the pauper's oath and received a relief card. At the shelters and flophouse he mixed with the shelter men, getting direct quotations from those interviewed...careful to make the quotations exact...joined in all shelter activities, games, discussions, and efforts to secure work...really became part of shelter life..." from the preface.
An historical record of treatment of the homeless, presenting the localized techniques of relief, and detailed information on the policy of the shelters in Chicago from 1930-1938. Information on Bloomington, Oklahoma City, St Louis, Kansas City, Seattle, Decatur, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, New York, and Cleveland...plus comparisons...a veritable wealth of the conditions and attitudes of "mass relief policies".
But also a deeper understanding of the life of the "unattached" (homeless) man which may carry forward to today.
