viii+514 pages with frontispiece map. Quarto (10 1/2" x 8 3/4") housed in a custom slipcase. Translated by Maurice Keatinge. First English edition.
Bernal Dïaz del Castillo was a conquistador, who wrote an eyewitness account of the conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards under Hernan Cortes, himself serving as a rodelero under Cortes. Born in Medina del Campo (Spain), he came from a family of little wealth and he himself had received only a minimal education. He sailed to Cuba in 1514 to make his fortune, but after two years found few opportunities there. Much of the native population of the island had already been killed by epidemics and forced labor, and in 1517 an expedition was sent to the smaller Caribbean islands to find alternative sources of labor. Dïaz joined this group, under the command of Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba. It was a difficult venture, and although they discovered the Yucatan coast, by the time the expedition returned to Cuba they were in disastrous shape. Nevertheless, Dïaz… Read More

Antverpiae: Ex officina Plantiniana apud viduam, & Ioannem Moretum, 1595. Hardcover. Second edition, corrected. Small 8vo. pp. 137, [7]. With 22 engravings accompanying the text. Title page contains the Plantin device. Bound in a fine unsigned modern full calf binding with blind stamped and gilt boards and an extra-gilt spine. Interior pages are clean and fresh with an occasional spot. Edges are trimmed a bit closely on some leaves. A very attractive copy. The engravings, which mostly depict different forms of crucifixion, are ascribed to the Dutch engraver Peter van der Borcht. His work “De cruce libri tres” (first printed in 1583) is an important scholarly study on crucifixion in antiquity. [Bibliographie Lipsienne I, pp. 189-190; Adams L-778].

Description:
Philadelphia: George Barrie, [1875]. First edition, in two volumes (pp.viii, 358, contents; 360, list of plates). Folio (38 cm) in maroon buckram, gilt titles; "one hundred grand compositions by Gustave Dore" executed by a number of skilled engravers in wood. J.-P. Michaud (1767- 1839) published the first volume of the History in 1811 but continued work on the subject for some years into the 1830's with a visit to Egypt and Syria. The book is described as "more interesting than exact", and it's true there are any number of flashing swords and rearing horses and no doubt that suited Dore just fine, but Michaud was, afterall, a journalist rather than an historian. Generally tight and clean, but the covers are a bit frayed along the bottom edges with a few stains; plate 1 with a thumb-size chip out of the margin not affecting the image, several loose endpapers, a page or two with tide-line; one volume opens at several places and there is a hinge just starting. Still Very Good.
