This complete set of 42 volumes of the Works of Voltaire, limited to 1,000 sets, is in exceptional, near fine, condition. In uniform red cloth with gilt titles on spines. All show just minor shelf wear, very unusual for a set more than 120 years old. Appears unread, with most of the pages still uncut. Bindings all still tight and sound. Complete sets of this edition are uncommon. A set in such excellent condition may be unique. It would be an impressive set for any library bookcase.
Francois-Marie Arouet, (1694-1778) better known by his nom de plume, Voltaire, was a French Enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher famous for his wit, his attacks on the established Catholic Church and Christianity as a whole, and his advocacy of freedom of religion, freedom of speech and separation of church and state. He was a major influence on thought and philosophy, both of his time and later. His writings influenced both the American and French revolutions.
John Morley, who wrote the biography in vol. XLII, was a British Liberal statesman, writer and newspaper editor.
The editor, Tobias Smollett, was a Scottish poet and author. He was best known for his picaresque novels, such as Roderick Random (1748), Peregrine Pickle (1751) and Humphry Clinker (1771)
