Lomdon: Jacob Tonson, 1699. Third. Very Good.

8vo [6], 248 pp, plus 6 leaves of plates (some folding) of mollusc specimens It lacks the initial blank leaf but is otherwise complete Period speckled calf boards, rebacked, chipping to head and tail, wear to corners and edges Very small initials in early ink to title verso, four leaves with marginal chips (no loss), some occasional foxing, clean overall, Very Good Published after a six-month trip Contains various observations including those upon medical ethics, science, art, books, and others [ESTC R2460; Wing L2527]

Martin Lister FRS (1639 â€" 1712) was an English naturalist and physician His daughters Anne and Susanna were two of his illustrators and engravers

He contributed numerous articles on natural history, medicine and antiquities to the Philosophical Transactions He was the first arachnologist and conchologist, and provided an unprecedented picture of a seventeenth-century virtuoso Lister is recognized for his discovery of ballooning spiders and as the father of conchology, but it is less well known that he invented the histogram, provided Newton with alloys, and donated the first significant natural history collections to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford Just as Lister was the first to make a systematic study of spiders and their webs, this biography is the first to analyze the significant webs of knowledge, patronage, and familial and gender relationships that governed his life as a scientist and physician As a conchologist he was held in high esteem, but while he recognized the similarity of fossil mollusca to living forms, he regarded them as inorganic imitations produced in the rocks

This edition was preceded by two editions published the same year In 1697, Lister accompanied William Bentinck, Lord Portland, on a diplomatic mission to Paris as physician "His duties left him ample time to meet and talk with other intellectuals, to see their collections and gardens, and to explore the city He was there for six months and shortly after his return published A Journey to Paris in the Year 1698 The book ran to three editions within a year, but was lampooned by William King for its supposed triviality In fact, it is a unique first-hand account of Parisian scientific society, and a useful description of the city and its life" 248 pp.

London (and New York): Hodder and Stoughton (for George H. Doran Company), 1908. First U.S. edition, only printing, first state. Hardcover. This is the U.S. first edition, more humble in appearance than its British counterpart, but also far more scarce. My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs ostensibly taken by the author. This copy is the elusive first state of the first American edition. The first U.S. edition is far scarcer than the British first edition, with only 1400 copies sold (encompassing all three states), in contrast to more than 8000 copies of the more frequently seen British edition. Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1949. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Here is a full set of U.S. editions of Churchill's postwar speeches in the scarce dust jackets. These volumes span the period from immediately after the second World War, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through the end of 1952, during his second Premiership. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the beginning of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb and U.S. invention of the hydrogen bomb. The U.S. postwar speeches were published in very small numbers, making jacketed U.S. editions much rarer than their British counterparts. Collectors should note that the U.S. postwar speeches are only four volumes, as the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, had no U.S. edition. All four volumes offered here are in fine condition - clean, tight, and square with unfaded bindings, and… Read More

Description:
London, printed for Jacob Tonson, 1698. . First edition; 8vo (18.5 x 13 cm); 6 engraved plates (including 2 folding); modern French red crushed morocco in Jansenist style, raised bands, lettered in gilt with small monogram to foot of spine, broad gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt; [6], 245, [1]pp. A very good example. The first edition of the zoologist and physician Dr. Martin Lister's (d.1712) A Journey to Paris, an account of the author's trip to the city in 1698 in the company of the diplomat William Bentinck, the Earl of Portland. The book was lampooned at the time by the poet William King (1663-1712) for its supposed triviality. Despite this it performed well, and ran to three editions within a year. It offers an interesting firsthand account of Parisian scientific society at the turn of the century as seen through the eyes of a naturalist who would 'much rather have walked a 100 paces under the meanest Hedge in Languedoc, than any the finest Alley at Versailles or St. Clou' (p.3).… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
