Embossed library stamp on a few pages, bookplate on front pastedown; otherwise unmarked. Provenance: From the collection of Burton scholar and bibliographer James Casada. Written a few years after Burton's celebrated account of his journey to Mecca and Medina, this book describes the explorer's 1860 visit to Salt Lake City. Burton, who met Brigham Young on the trip, applied his characteristic ethnographic eye to Mormon ways, and his work offers a detailed and sympathetic portrait. Tenants of building (as per signs) include: Union Bank of Australia, Alex Brown Colliery, Belgian & US Consulate, New Lambton Colliery Indemnity Fire and Machinery Insurance, Hewison Shipping Insurance & General Commission Agent. According to Newcastle Library records these businesses were located in a bank building in Newcastle, but pictorial records depict a different building. It would seem highly coincidental if these same businesses were located at the same time in nearby East Maitland or Morpeth, but remains a possibility. No other pictorial records can be located..

Portraits include: the mayor, the Fire Commissioners back to 1871, Chiefs, Captains, Lieutenants, Engine Drivers, Engineers, Hosemen, and Ladder men.

Advertisements include breweries, hardware supplies, saloons, blacksmiths, and stables among many others.

Second issue of this Civil War era almanac and business directory from Bancroft, first published in 1862. In unusually clean condition for this cheaply produced volume and also quite interesting for its provenance. John Hume was the brother of western detective and lawman, James B. Hume, famous for his bringing of the notorious outlaw and stage coach robber, Black Bart, to justice. At the time of this publication, John served as District Attorney in El Dorado County, his salary of $2,000 being noted in the almanac.
