Collection of 40 photographs of East Coast Americana
by Van Vechten, Carl
- Used
N.p.: N.p., 1930. Collection of 40 black-and-white photographs by Carl Van Vechten, printed on card stock, many as postcards, as was the case with many of the photographs he developed. The collection of photographs shows a variety of subjects and styles representing a little-seen side of Van Vechten, who is primarily remembered as a portrait photographer. Most of the photographs are unidentified. The majority appear to have been taken in New York City, though several seem to reflect a trip to the country. Subjects include close-ups of architectural features, buildings, fountains and statues, store displays, flowers, and candid shots of ordinary citizens. Identified photos include two photos of the August Pingpank Barber Shop at 413 Bleeker Street in New York City, one photo of the Trinity Cemetery and the New York Curb Exchange, two of Rockefeller Fountain in Bronx Park, and three photos of male swimmers performing "the Aquacode at the World's Fair" (noted in holograph ink on the verso). Only the "Aquacode" photos bear Van Vechten's trademark blindstamp, though all the photographs come from his archive. All photos 3.5 x 5.5 inches. About Near Fine.
