Paris: Louis Broder, 1956. First edition, published posthumously. Hardcover. Fine condition. 130/150. Signed by Picasso on limitation page. Quarto. 126pp, 4 plates. Original white morocco with gilt lettering on spine and black geometric Maroquin applications on covers; doublures in red morocco with gilt monogram (L-P. L) at front. Gilt edges. Japan flyleaf endpapers. Original wraps and spine bound in. Binding signed J. Clasat. Second volume of the series "Écrits et Gravures." Addition twenty copies were issued with Roman numerals I to XX.

One of several works by Jacob illustrated by Picasso. Like Picasso, Max Jacob lived in Bateau-Lavoir Rue Ravignan in 1907. He was one of Picasso's first and closest friends. Max Jacob narrates on Futurists, Surrealists, about his friends Apollinaire and Picasso and, of course, about Paul Guillaume as a collector of African art. Picasso made three drypoints for this book in honor of his friend who died at an early age on September 7, 1956. Text in French. Binding very lightly rubbed, protected by modern mylar.

Paris 12 août 1916, 6,3x8,6cm, une feuille. - Photographie originale prise par Jean Cocteau le 12 août 1916, représentant Manuel Ortiz de Zarate, Moïse Kisling, Max Jacob, Pablo Picasso et sa petite amie de l'époque, le mannequin Pâquerette, posant devant l'iconique café La Rotonde, boulevard du Montparnasse à Paris. Tirage argentique d'époque, sans doute unique, provenant des archives personnelles de Jean Cocteau puis du fonds Maurice Sachs. Cette image a été publiée dans l'ouvrage de Billy Klüver intitulé A day with Picasso?: twenty-four photographs by Jean Cocteau (1997). Klüver précise cependant qu'il n'a pas eu connaissance de la photographie originale et que le cliché illustrant son ouvrage est un tirage moderne d'après le négatif des archives Jean Cocteau. Max Jacob. Illustrated with three cubist etchings by Picasso, in full page, from 1913. Max Jacob three-act play reflect the author mystic quest and his research into the cabala and astrology, Picasso completed the illustrations during the winter of 1913/14 making three etchings and dry points, one for each act, to which he gave the titles: Femme Nue (plate 1) Nature Morte au Crâne (plate 2) and Femme (plate 3). This book is second illustrated book published by Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, created in collaboration with Picasso. Signed by the Picasso and Jacob in the justification page and marked as number "40" of 85 copies on "Holland van Gelder" (total edition 106 copies). The book is complete, in the original glassine, light offsetting is present in the text page near the first illustration. Ref Cramer #3. Very good conditions.
