Chapman and Hall, 1845. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. This copy has the publisher's imprint within the engraved title page, the colon after London on the title page and page 39 unnumbered. Half bound in contemporary black leather, 5 raised spine bands, gilt stamped lettering, borders, and decorations, and marbled boards and endpapers; top edge, gilt. The volume is edge rubbed with corner tips exposed and the joints are also rubbed with some abrasions. The preliminary pages, to include the engraved title, have varying degrees of foxing, two tears on the last page of text, and occasional turned corner and sporadic soiling. There is a small bookseller's label on the rear pastedown and the bookplate of Lord Esme Gordon (author of "Legend of Birse") affixed to the front pastedown.
