[Booth, John Wilkes] BOSTON MUSEUM SECOND WEEK OF J. WILKES BOOTH THE EMINENT YOUNG TRAGEDIAN, Who has been honored by the attendance of LARGE AND ENTHUSIASTIC AUDIENCES, AND WILL APPEAR This Tuesday Evening, May 3, 1864, IN SHAKESPEARE'S PLAY OF ROMEO AND JULIET! Boston: The Boston Museum, 1864. A theatrical playbill, 32 cm x 11 cm. A trimmed theatrical broadside advertisement, giving notice of a continued successful run of John Wilkes Booth's appearance as Romeo in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in Boston in May 1864, less than a year before he shot President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre on April 15, 1865, in Washington. This rare surviving playbill was at one time mounted in an album, with traces of the paper remaining adhered to the verso, otherwise in remarkably good almost fine condition.

1714 Joutel Journal Voyage MEXICO La Salle Texas Expedition Indians MississippiThe BEST account of the La Salle's Texas Expedition!
Henri Joutel was an important 17th-century French explorer who is best remembered for his involvement in the final American expedition of Rene de La Salle. The Texas Expedition of Sla Salle began in 1684 when he and crew left France to establish a colony on the Gulf of Mexico. The voyage is one of the most important European voyages in search of the Mississippi River – a voyage the ended in mutiny and the death of La Salle. The established colony was a failure after being overtaken by Karankawa Indians.

New York: Charles Magnus, 1863. 1st Edition 1st Printing. No Binding. Very Good+/No Jacket. An extremely scarce map titled "Panorama of the Mississippi Valley and its Fortifications", which illustrates the theater of war that was the Mississippi River during the American Civil War. Published in New York in 1863 by Charles Magnus. Nicely matted and well framed. This broadside map shows the cities, towns, stores, plantations, mills, academies, etc. along the Mississippi River from St. Louis southward through Memphis, continuing through Vicksburg, and ending at the Gulf of Mexico. Each panel is embellished with a vignette of the important city of that area. Two insets list distances: "various points on the Mississippi, from St Louis to New Orleans", and "Distances navigable by steam on Mississippi River and principal its branches". Some sources suggest there are one or two other plates in this title, but only the portraits are bound in this volume. The Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806) was the first overland expedition by the United States to go to the Pacific coast. This was an extremely important expedition because it laid the groundwork for the Western Expansion, and gave our government a first hand account of the resources we picked up with the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The expedition was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, but was greatly assisted by Sacajawea, their Native American guide and translator. This work was published because of the growing…

The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire…

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
