Includes sections on the states and territories; the federal government and public establishments connected to it; the Indians; the population, agriculture, trade, revenue and resources; manufactures; commerce; canals and roads, etc. Small bookplates of the Regency Circulating Library of Whitehaven on the front pastedowns, mild scattered foxing troughout, paper loss to the spines (especially of volume II), edges dusty, wear to extremities, occasional tear to the leaves. With twenty-three large, cabinet-size photographs by William H. Schurch. Originally published in parts, the work was supposed to include fifteen issues but only ten were published. According to the publisher's advertisement on the wrappers, each part contained two large photographic views (which retailed for $1 when sold separately.) Laid in are several sheets of paper, probably contemporary, with a hand-written index to the text, including a complete list of the photographs, which might indicate this copy was bound with twenty-three rather than twenty-five or twenty-six photographs as in some other copies. Published London: Richard Bentley, 1836. Large 8vo., 6" x 9", xv+440pp.; vi+408pp., with half titles and frontispieces etched by Hervieu present. Marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt. Name plate of noted collector Benjamin DeForest Curtiss on front pastedown of each volume. Power was a well known Irish comedian, actor and author. He toured the Eastern U.S. extensively and was lost at sea returning home from his last tour of 1841. He was great-grandfather of the Hollywood actor of the same name.
