The author gives us a picture of the Irish countryside consequent on the revolution and the overthrow of the feudal land owning system and to picture the local characteristics of this change. A system of growth of democracy and middle-class life. Bound in orange cloth, spine lettering gilt. A near fine copy in unclipped pictorial dust jacket showing some toning to edges, crease to rear flap.

Autograph Letter Signed. One Page. New Fairfield, Conn, 19 March, 1938. To Irving Haas, collector and author who later wrote, "Bruce Rogers: A Bibliography.."in 1968. In part: "My dear Irvin, Here are several book labels to choose from. I hope you can find space for the John M Wing item as I consider it the best of the type-movement ones..." He includes a copy of the Wing Foundation of the Newberry LIbrary's plate for possible inclusion in a proposed article. He also suggests including WIlliam A. Kittredge's bookplate (designed by Rogers) if Kittredge ends up writing the article. Article in question appeared in "The Book Collector's Packet," May, 1938. Included in this lot, a small decorative.John M Wing Foundation stick-on library stamp. Bruce Rogers letters are quite scarce.

The sheet measures 10 in x 7 ¼ in, with a vignette-decorated border of scenes from the play around an oval image, showing Fanny Kemble Butler in a full-figure pose. Once an illustration in a book, now disbound, with original tissue guard still attached, now torn. Slight chipping of the upper right-hand corner of the sheet, with no image loss.

These four volumes are bound in 3/4 leather (spines and cover corners) with marbled covers and endsheets. Volume One: 1850 - 1854, Volume Two: 1854 - 1860, Volume Three: 1860 - 1862, Volume Four: 1862 - 1864. All four volumes are in Very Good Condition. Second edition, based largely on Peck's Guide for Emigrants, published in Boston in 1831, including chapters on Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida, and also including a history of steam-boating in the West. Sabin first attributed the work to Robert Bache.
Condition: Some staining to pages as well as intermittent foxing. Previous owner's name to front end paper, recased with end paper renewed else very good.
