It is a printed form document, on cream-colored paper, with blanks filled in by hand, and hand signed by Wolcott. It is folded multiple times, and has separated into two halves. A blank section of one of these halves is also separated, but present. There is evidence that the two halves were taped together at one time..

St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British.
