It was not released in book form until 1922. Ubu Krol is inspired by three of Shakespeare's plays: Hamlet, King Lear and Macbeth. The play begins with Ubu, a former king from France, who, upon his arrival in Poland, becomes the captain of the dragoons of King Wenceslas. One day his wife Ubica persuades her husband to make a coup d'état. Ubu manages to seize power in Poland and kill the king, but one of the royal sons, Byczyslaw, escapes alive.
