Larsen. The St. Roch sailed from Vancouver, B.C. to Sydney, Nova Scotia, 1940-42, and from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to Vancouver, B.C., 1944. It was the first vessel to traverse the Northwest Passage both ways, and the first to accomplish it in a single season. Royal Canadian Mounted Police 1945 under the command of Staff-Sergeant H A Larsen. Reprinted by the King's Printer, Dept. of Public Printing and Stationery, Ottawa, Ontario. 2000.
In the extended Preface, James P. Delgado, Executive Director, Vancouver Maritime Museum relates what the St. Roch accomplished post-war.
"St. Roch" made a return voyage to the Arctic in 1946, but the advent of aircraft and Cold War tensions were changing the north. There was no longer a place for the ship, and after 1948, she was laid up. In 1950, the RCMP took St. Roch out of mothballs and sent her back to Halifax, this time by way of the Panama Canal. The plan was to use the ship in the eastern Arctic. The 1950 voyage gave St. Roch a new laurel--the first ship to circumnavigate North America in her career. But the plan to employ St. Roch in Halifax never materialized.
