He was responsible for the education of some of Australia's most well-known engineers, and researched the properties of engineering materials. He died in 1926, and was the longest serving professor at the University of Sydney - yet the only university degree he received was an honorary LLD from the University of Glasgow. (Written dedication to Jeremy Steele, University of Sydney.).
