These German exiles started arriving in the New World in the 1730s and slowly started settling up and down the Savannah River. It is estimated that approx. 50% of the population of Effingham & Chatham County areas are directly descended from these early settlers. Since the first immigrants arrived in 1734, as many as 15 generations have followed, many of whom still live on ancestral land.
