Description:
Melbourne: Melbourne University Press / Manning Clark House, 2000. Paperback small octavo (with flaps), very good condition. 185 pp. The Masters thesis of the noted Australian historian, published posthumously. Alexis de Tocqueville (1805 - 1859) was one of the greatest political theorists of the 19th century. Reads more like a discussion in political philosophy than a history thesis. His underlying concern was how to ensure that civil liberties and democratic institutions are not used by those opposed to them as stepping-stones to dictatorship.
