Our Mutual Friend Paperback - 2011

by Charles Dickens; Introduction by Nick Hornby

About this book

Our Mutual Friend (written in the years 1864–65) is the last novel completed by Charles Dickens and is in many ways one of his most sophisticated works, combining deep psychological insight with rich social analysis. At one level it centres on, in the words of critic J. Hillis Miller, "money, money, money, and what money can make of life" but in a deeper sense it's also about 'human values'.

From the publisher

The author of How to Be Good and High Fidelity contributes an introduction to this classic--a sophisticated mystery, a love story, and a tale of the corruptive power of wealth John Harmon returns to England after years in exile to claim his inheritance: a great fortune and a beautiful young woman to whom he is betrothed, but has never met. When Harmon's body is pulled out of the Thames, all of London is fascinated by the mystery of the murdered man and his unclaimed riches. Scavengers, social-climbers, lawyers, teachers, a money-lender, a dolls-dressmaker, and men and women both honest and villainous will all become embroiled in this tale of love and obsession, death and rebirth.

First Edition Identification

The book was first serialized from 1864-1865 in 19 monthly installments. It was then published as a novel in 1865 by Chapman & Hall, London, with 40 illustration plates  by Marcus Stone.

Media reviews

"Our Mutual Friend made me want to be a writer."
--Zoe Heller, Guardian

"Dickens wasn't just telling a story, but drawing a panoramic picture of his times, full of detail about the way the Victorians lived, loved and thought. Our Mutual Friend is superbly constructed -- part social satire, part murder mystery, part love story. It is crowded with memorable characters: the aspirational Veneerings, the playboy lawyer Eugene Wrayburn, and the heroines: giddy-minded Bella Wilfur and saintly Lizzy Hexam."
--Independent

"Perhaps his greatest work. The great novel of London: dark, wise, unsentimental."
--William Boyd, Newsweek
