Wyoming Territory is the 20th stand-alone romance novel by American author, Jackie Merritt, and is part of the Harlequin Historicals series. Young widow, Amanda Spencer has been fiercely holding onto her hard-won independence in the year since her husband Len died, running their Wyoming ranch with just her three hired hands. But when she comes upon a sheepherder with his family and flock of sheep on her land, she senses trouble brewing. The cattlemen of her valley are resolutely anti-sheep: she needs to act quickly. But her warning to the sheepherder goes unheeded, and the next day, his flock has been razed, he has been murdered and his family is homeless. As if this isn’t enough, Amanda’s nearest neighbour, the formidable Choice Brenton keeps coming around. Incommunicative, somber, guarded, but the message is clear all the same: he wants to make love to her. This romance, whilst rather slow-moving, has a bit of intrigue, drama and plenty of sexual tension, despite being set in the late 19th century. Amanda is a heroine with principles and plenty of pluck, and Choice starts off a bit arrogant but develops into a thoughtful and brave hero. Quite enjoyable.
