André Villers (1930 - 2016) was a French photographer and artist best known for his pictures of Pablo Picasso in the south of France in the 1950s. He first met Pablo Picasso by chance on a Vallauris street in 1953, where the artist was working in a ceramics studio. This serendipitous encounter marked the beginning of a profound friendship and creative dialogue which would ensue in the years following.

Very heavy wear, scuffing & rubbing, and cracked creasing to boards, with corners bumped and eroded. Both hinges starting. Wear and creasing to loose ffep. Rfep chipped and torn. Penciled sketch to rear of rfep. Large portions of front flyleaves torn away. Creasing to title page. Noticeable foxing and toning to pages. Includes illustrations (many full-page) by Jean Charlot, Stuart Davis, Adolph Dehn, Wanda Gag, Hugo Gellert, William Gropper, George Grosz, Reginald Marsh, Diego Rivera, Boardman Robinson, and Rafael Tamayo. Laid in: two invitations to a New Masses costume ball. Each issue is within its own protective plastic bag. Some wear, chipping & tearing, and minor toning to wraps. Bindings are in general exremely worn and fragile, with wraps and adjacent pages detached but present in some cases. Contents are complete and sound overall. This example of the important map is from the early 1525 edition published in Strassburg. Laurent Fries' version of Ptolemy's eleventh map of Asia, covering the "southeastern corner" of the known world. The map shows "India beyond the Ganges" and covers the eastern part of the Indian Ocean, prominently showing the Malaysian Peninsula or the Golden Chersonese as the Greeks called it. Fries' map is a reduced copy of Waldseemüller's eleventh Ptolemy map of Asia, with the Malaysian peninsula, the islands of Maniolae (by some identified with Manila), and the legendary huge sea port of Cattigara, possibly corresponding to Canton. It is these furthest places in the Far East that the Greek merchants visited for trading.
