About This Item

London: G. G. & J. Robinson, R. Faulder, B & J White, et al., 1797. Hardcover. Good + overall. A pleasant set of Shakespeare's works in seven volumes, in the original tree calf boards with later leather spines. The typesetting is very attractive.

ESTC; N25912; OCLC: 629928073. "This edition has the same setting of type in volumes 1-6 as the 1797 Plays of William Shakspeare printed in London for T. Longman, etc., with an additional leaf "To the public" following the volume title page in v. 1. Additionally, there exist two states of this leaf, where one is unsigned, and one is signed 'b'./ Each volume with a half-title and a volume title page; each play with a divisional title page./ Not in Jaggard, W. Shakespeare bibliography." The additional leaf in this copy is unsigned. (Notes from OCLC: 2747345).

Contents include:
v. 1. Tempest ; Two gentlemen of Verona ; Merry wives of Windsor ; Twelfth-night ; Measure for measure ; Much ado about nothing ; Midsummer-night's dream -- v. 2. Love's labour's lost ; Merchant of Venice ; As you like it ; All's well that ends well ; Taming of the shrew ; Winter's tale ; Comedy of errors -- v. 3. Macbeth ; King John ; King Richard II ; King Henry IV ; King Henry V -- v. 4. King Henry VI ; King Richard III ; King Henry VIII ; Troilus and Cressida -- v. 5. 8vo, pp 578, 627, 577, 660, 620, 552, & 233 plus glossary, with volumes 1-6 being the plays and volume 7 poems. Rebacked in leather with 6 chambers, stamped decoration, hinges starting. Slt foxing in margins not affecting text.

A most pleasant copy to read and hold, albeit not a fine binding.
