The Broadway premiere took place at the Winter Garden Theatre on 26 September 1957. It was first published as a book in the US the year preceding the UK edition. The Guardian wrote of the West End debut that "as a production, as a total work for the stage West Side Story is superb. All that has been said (perhaps too often) about American vitality finds justification in these dances, at once so loose-limbed and so tautly executed. The opening clash, the dance at the gym, the Puerto Rican girls' America, and the rival gang's Cool: man is a splendid animal, and these remind us of it." Octavo.
