First published in its entirety in the original Russian in 1869, this edition is translated into English by Louise and Aylmer Maude.In the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper.Tolstoy's work chronicles the French invasion of Russia and its aftermath during the Napoleonic era. He uses five interlocking narratives following different Russian aristocratic families to illustrate Napoleon's impact on Tsarist society. The novel made its author 'the true lion of the Russian literature' according to Ivan Goncharov.With the inscription of M G Boyes to the front free endpaper and following blank. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, fine. Inscription to front free endpaper and following blank.
