Sterling condition hardcover copy, with unbruised tips, tight binding, and clean internals, showing only very slight shelf- and edge-wear; not ex-library, with neither underlining nor highlighting anywhere. Bound most handsomely in textured brown linen cloth over boards, brown textured paper thereover, title label affixed neatly to spine. Housed in a Fine condition slip-case, of simple construction and featuring brown paper over boards and with gilt titling to paper label over spine. Gift-quality, inside and out. No. 482 of 1,500 copies printed, being a copy SIGNED by the illustrator, Denver Gillen. The African-American educator and inspiration published this critically acclaimed autobiography first in 1901, and it was translated into 18 languages eventually. Born into slavery in Virginia and eventually founder of the influential Macon County, Alabama school, the Tuskegee Institute. Handsomely bound and embellished by the full-page illustrations of Denver Gillen (1914-1975) xiv [6], 3-212 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Synopsis

Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was born a slave on a Virginia farm. Later freed, he headed and developed the Tuskegee Institute and became a leader in education. Widely considered a spokesman for his people, he emphasized social concern in three books as well as his autobiography. Louis R. Harlan , born in Clay County, Mississippi, in 1922, is Professor of History at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is the author of Separate and Unequal (University of North Carolina Press, 1958) and of a two-volume biography of Booker T. Washington (Oxford University Press, 1972, 1983). He is the editor, with Raymond W. Smock, of The Booker T. Washington Papers (13 vols., University of Illinois Press, 1972-84). He has been awarded the Beveridge Prize, Bancroft Prize, and Pulitzer Prize for his biography of Washington.
